Simplicity wins, sometimes.

The Peter Kern Library is a speakeasy that is as straightforward as it gets. Hidden in a hotel in downtown Knoxville, this small establishment is someplace that mixes a bit of mystery and adventure into a classy, straightforward joint. The only hint of its existence outside of social media is a lone red lamp, illuminating a door in an alleyway.

My slightly deaf self (who can also be a bit oblivious at times) likes a good challenge of looking for something hidden like this. Once you’re looking, it’s fairly easy to spot, however a random passerby might not give this a second thought. One might even second-guess queuing in a dark alley in an unfamiliar location.

Once inside, you’re in a barren hallway where a host asks for a password and asks if you have a reservation. Usually, you need one. If you’re flying solo, there may be a place at the bar for you. In spite of only 4 or 5 seats at this small bar, you’ll likely be able to sit down right away.

The ambience is literally literary (do you like that alliteration?). I like sitting at the bar because it gives me a nice vantage point for this whole private study – erm, I mean bar. Since I have a hard time hearing people or picking out voices in an environment with a lot of overlapping voices, I get a lot of enjoyment out of sitting at the bars and watching the mixologists do their thing. I can see what ingredients go into my drink and appreciate the art form. It also makes explanations of drinks a bit more straightforward. Here, I learned what a Paper Plane cocktail is – and it’s now one of my favorites.

The ambience, like I mentioned above, is that of a library or study with booths lining the wall. It’s intimate, dark and cozy. I’m reminded of my grandfather’s ornate yet homey office in his old house. You feel secluded and welcome and have a strange urge to go buy a monocle.

I look forward to returning with a crew of friends and exploring the nooks and crannies around the fireplace.
